DIRECTOR’S NOTES
There’s an official version of the past and there’s an official version of the present. Both versions are usually presented by television and the mass media. Television has become the truth that we attempt to reproduce in our daily lives. To do so, you should be good-looking, rich and successful. But there’s a problem: most of us are not “good looking”, few of us are “rich”, and in these days of “credit crunch”, success is even more elusive.
Bastard Nights grew from the need to talk about our fears, from our desire to summon our spirit of
regeneration using words that break the conventions of language. Bastard Nights tells it like it is. The
issues we face are big ones: sex, death, religion and politics. Life is short and liberation is a duty and that is to seek the truth behind the facts, to discover the real person beyond what someone else is asking us to be.
Bastard Nights would like to clear the decks, wipe the slate clean, start afresh to discover what’s behind all the wars, behind a body mutilated by fire, inside the house of a pensioner obliged to return to work at the age of seventy, behind the comforting morality of religion, behind all the grieving, behind the flag. Bastard Nights is a tapestry of panels rendered in the form of stand-up comedy, exhibitionism, drama, satire, and tragedy.

Dionisi
Like pristine transgenic roses, Renata Ciaravino, Silvia Gallerano and Carmen Pellegrinelli blossom in the tradition of Bill Hinks, Lenny Bruce, Lindsay Kemp, Pippo Delbono, Lady Oscar and Daniele Luttazzi. They believe in the bond between body and spirit and are not ashamed to use the body’s fluids and solids when speaking of the spirit, or reticent to use poetry when speaking of its waste.
Thanks to ETRE – Cariplo Prize won in 2007, Compagnia Dionisi will be the resident company at Teatro del Popolo in Gallarate (Milan) until 2010 as “Dioniso in A8”. The Troupe’s activity is continuously sponsored by the Lombardia Region and the City of Milan, and also by other agencies depending on the projects being developed each year.
Renata Ciaravino, Art Director, has written extensively for the theatre. She has worked with songstress Gianna Nannini and written for radio and television. Her works have been translated and staged in French, German, Turkish, and Polish. She has taught at Pristina University in Kosovo and worked at the international drama workshop at Théâtre du Rond Point, Paris, and at the Brussels Centre d’Art Scenique with Stanislas Nordey and Federico Tiezzi.
