Passion and deviation are put to the test as a brother and sister are locked in a room, which is both their refuge and their prison. The girl is strong, egocentric, lucid, cold, obsessed by a constant search for her mother; he is fragile, weak, hypersensitive, unable to relate and with a deep sense of paternal abandonment. They are part of us: to understand we would have to see beyond the trap into which we have fallen; slacken the dizziness of our anxiety, silence the echo of our security.
A story of love and pain, violence and fantasy, asphyxiating presences and unforeseen absences asks something of everyone: to rediscover the meaning of our existence. These ferociously ironic voices, screaming, sometimes weeping, sometimes silent, represent fragments of life desperate for love.
Emptiness does not engulf the leading characters, but the people in their lives: failed parents, selfish fathers, inconsistent mothers, distant friends. Their story is our story, if only we are honest enough to admit it. It is a story about the absence of love.
Animanera produce daring physical theatre that confronts controversial social issues, combining provocative aesthetic design with theatre, music, video and art. The UK premiere of Or[f]unny appears as part of Espresso! Teatro Italiano a celebration of the best Italian theatre at C venues.
Director's notes
From the two actors’ personal experience, the style in which the scenes and performance are composed are based mainly on the idea of a “sense of truth” and aims to be a product of what happens within the
characters, their experience of life, a daily routine which resembles a cruel ritual in which the audience
participates by observing the intimacy of their home and their lives.
We ask ourselves what it feels like to be “inappropriate” and to witness “inappropriate behaviour” in silence.
The dramaturgical inspiration stems directly from psychological case studies on youth, on loneliness and
deviation. The dramatic content is based on this theme (interviews, images, music, free association), as well as the personal experience of the actors and the improvisation. What emerges is a voice – discordant,
disjointed and uncomfortable – for the two characters to portray.
The director’s objective concentrates on the obsessive search for an extremely intimate and truthful
situation, together with a style and cinematically inspired montage (rhythm and attention to image):
simple but raw.

ANIMANERA (Milan, Italy)
Animanera processes original dramas, examines and expresses opposites, similarities of diversity, social themes, the borders of uncertainty and includes artists from varying artistic fields in a dynamic and
hypercreative network. Its roots are in the community and its work is to explore the issues that unite or tear apart the fabric of that community.
Animanera is a place where different voices may blend with experimental thought, dedicated to the
communal project, giving life to drama which up to then has been made-to-measure: events, performances, sensorial labyrinths, secret rooms, creating events which, through provocation and irony, theatre, music, video and art blend together.
The company combines theatrical language with the cinematographic one: the attention to imagery, the soundtracks, drama, construction of sets and locations.
